As we began planning our Springtime European Adventure, we were focused on Portugal and Italy, but we also really wanted to have some time in Paris. However, we were working with limited time as we only had 10 days total to fit everything in. So how do you experience Paris on limited time?? With an Extended layover, of course!
Whether your layover is planned or an unexpected part of your flight plan, don’t let those hours ticking away at the airport terminal get you down! An extended layover in Paris can be a fantastic opportunity to experience the highlights of the City of Light. Paris, with its rich history, stunning architecture, and mouthwatering cuisine, has something to offer everyone in the family…even if it’s in a short 12 hours.
Let’s get into how we made the most of our extended layover in Paris, so you can to…
Plan Ahead:
Before you embark on your adventure, a bit of planning goes a long way. Make sure you check visa requirements, as well as any restrictions related to your layover. If you’re a US passport holder, no visa is required. Also, confirm the hours you have to explore Paris, considering both the time it takes to get through customs and security, and the time you need to return to the airport. Getting out of the airport was a breeze, but getting back was a bit more time consuming. We used about 3 hours total on our exit and re-entry.
Baggage Storage:
Most major airports in Paris offer baggage storage facilities, which can be a lifesaver during an extended layover. This way, you won’t have to lug your luggage around the city. Bagages du Monde was easy to use and affordable.
Getting to the City:
Once you’ve sorted out your baggage situation, it’s time to head into Paris. Fortunately, Paris is well-connected to its airports by train and bus services. The RER B train connects Charles de Gaulle Airport and Orly Airport to central Paris. Consider buying a Paris Visite travel pass, which provides unlimited travel on the Parisian public transportation system.
Explore the Iconic Landmarks:
With limited time on your layover, focus on visiting a few iconic landmarks that the whole family can enjoy. Here are some must-visit spots:
- Eiffel Tower: Start your adventure with a visit to the iconic Eiffel Tower. Seriously, did you even go to Paris if you didn’t experience the beauty of the tower?? I’m going to say NOPE. If you have the time for long lines, you can take the elevator to the top for breathtaking views of the city. For a more budget-friendly and time friendly option, enjoy a picnic in the Champ de Mars park beneath the tower, or just walk the area and have your own personal photo shoot like we did.
- Louvre Museum: The Louvre is one of the world’s largest and most famous museums. Even if you don’t have time to explore the entire collection, you can still marvel at the Mona Lisa and the impressive glass pyramid.
- Notre-Dame Cathedral: While the interior of Notre-Dame is currently undergoing renovations, the exterior is still a sight to behold. Stroll along the Seine River and admire this Gothic masterpiece.
Family-Friendly Activities:
Paris isn’t just about museums and monuments; it’s also a family-friendly city. Consider these activities to keep everyone entertained:
- Boat Cruise on the Seine: Take a relaxing boat cruise along the Seine River. It’s a great way to see many of Paris’s famous landmarks while enjoying a leisurely ride. Unfortunately we didn’t have the time, but it’s on our list next time we go to the city. And, yes, there will be a next time!
- Parks and Gardens: Paris boasts beautiful parks like Luxembourg Gardens and Parc des Buttes-Chaumont. Let the kids burn off some energy while the adults relax.
- Café Culture: Experience the quintessential Parisian café culture. Stop at a sidewalk café for some pastries and people-watching. Café hopping was one of our faves. There are so many pastries to eat and vibes to catch.
- Plan a Family Photoshoot – There are so many photographers in Paris. We had a shoot scheduled, but our photog had to cancel at the last minute. I was so sad, but would still recommend this as a way to capture some of the iconic moments you’ll have in the city. Check Instagram and TikTok for recommendations and to see great spots to take your pics.
- Walk the City – One of our favorite ways to explore any city is on foot. You can see and feel so much more when you’re not on a train or in a car. Paris is very walkable, especially in the more popular areas. And, all the walking will wear everyone out so that the next leg of your flight you’ll get some good sleep.
Timing is Everything:
Be mindful of the time and plan to return to the airport with plenty of time to spare. It’s recommended to be back at the airport at least two hours before your international flight. And, don’t forget you have to go back and get your stored luggage.
An extended layover in Paris can turn a tedious travel day into a memorable family adventure. With some planning and a sense of adventure, you can soak up the beauty and culture of the City of Light, even if you only have a few hours to spare. So, get out there and make the most of your layover – after all, Paris is always a good idea!
