Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love, has always held a special place in American history and culture, but especially in my husband’s heart. He’s a native Philadelphian….not to be confused with the Philly burbs, lol. With its vibrant energy and rich historical significance, this city offers endless opportunities for exploration and family fun. Because my husband’s entire family still lives in there, we go back quite often, at least once a year. This Fall we used it as our landing site before heading on our Fall Break trip to NYC. We decided to explore the city like tourists this time and take in so many of the beautiful and historic sites that are so easily taken for granted by the locals.
Join us as we recount our fall escapade in Philadelphia, where we discovered the legacy of the Liberty Bell, took on the Rocky Steps, cheered for the 76ers at a preseason game, and paid our respects to the iconic Benjamin Franklin.
10-9-8-76ers!
Our first stop was the Wells Fargo Center, where we eagerly cheered for the 76ers at a thrilling preseason basketball game. The electrifying atmosphere of the stadium filled us with a sense of unity and enthusiasm, and we couldn’t help but get caught up in the contagious energy of the crowd. This was the kids’ first NBA game, and they were so hyped up that we got featured on the big jumbo screen. My kids were thrilled, and I was lucky enough to have my phone out recording at the exact same time! And, best of all the Sixers won, so we got to hear the iconic 76ers song at the end of the game!
If you’re looking to take your kids to their first NBA, I’d highly recommend a preseason game. First of all, it’s a lot less crowded than the regular season and the prices are lower.
Yo, Adrian!
No visit to Philadelphia would be complete without paying tribute to the legendary boxer, Rocky Balboa. I remember the first time my husband took me home to meet his mom, he had me run the Rocky steps and recorded it. It’s such a fond memory that we wanted to recreate it with the kids. We headed to the iconic Philadelphia Museum of Art. Ascending the grand staircase, we imitated Rocky’s triumphant run, and felt like true champions when we reached the top! Even the baby got in on the action, lol.
TIP: If you just want to run the steps and take in the view, then you can double park right near the base of the steps…watch out though, it’s like cars gone wild in the area. If you want to get a picture with the Rocky statue (located to the right of the staircase), then you should legally park because there will be a long line to get your turn with Rocky.
The Chime That Changed The World
The Liberty Bell, a powerful symbol of freedom, beckoned us to explore its rich history. At the Liberty Bell Center, we delved into the story behind this historic artifact, learning about its significance in America’s quest for independence. I highly recommend you discuss the liberty bell’s role in history before gong to the Center. It will bring the experience more full circle for you and your family. Also, take your time through the exhibit at the center which does a great and comprehensive job of the liberty bell’s story and all those involved.
Don’t forget to grab your picture. Speaking of picture…TIP: make sure you stage everyone in your photo in such a way that does not completely cover the crack…I mean, afterall, that’s the star of the show.
A Reverent Encounter with Benjamin Franklin
Philadelphia, being the birthplace of America, is forever intertwined with the legacy of Benjamin Franklin. With a sense of reverence, we made our way to Christ Church Burial Ground to pay homage, or more like just to say we saw it, to one of the founding fathers of the country. The grave site is a quick walk from the liberty bell.
Our fall family trip to Philadelphia was a true joyride through history and adventure. From the exhilarating 76ers game to conquering the Rocky Steps, immersing ourselves in the stories of the Liberty Bell, and paying our respects at Benjamin Franklin’s grave, we basked in the city’s rich American history.
After wrapping up our Day in Philly, we loaded into our rental car for a fun time in NYC. Read all about our New York Trip, here.
